What are cycling time trials, and why should triathletes use them to develop their race performance? Coach Paul Martin gives you the low down on what to expect, how to get started, and why you should give time trialing ago.
----------------------------
Time Trialing is a great way to practice our non-drafting triathlon bike legs! Typically 10, 25, or 50 miles, there is a suitable distance for most triathlon bike legs. Known as the race of truth, they take focus and develop our pain threshold. More importantly, they should be seen as a useful tool in learning how we can transfer power into speed.
So Why?
They’re great training for both your mind and body, learning how to ride fast over a set distance, practicing your sustainable power output while staying focussed.
We can practice a specific race distance
They're cheap, and you can add a short brick run to practice running off the bike under fatigue.
Practice eating and fuelling under stress in your race position at a specific intensity.
You can practice using your race-day equipment. Bike, helmet, suit, wheels, etc! Practicing your race day set up is imperative, often your bike handles differently with race gear and you want to make sure your race kit feels comfy too!
Whether you want to hone your triathlon bike leg skills or simply find out how fast you can ride, 10, 25 or 50 miles, why not give time trialing ago.
